One of the most exciting parts of planning your wedding day is finding the perfect dress. This has long been a time to hang out with your closest friends and play dress up like you did as a kid. A lot of brides have envisioned what their perfect dress looks like LONG before they are even engaged. However wedding dress shopping can be a bit of learning curve. I mean it isn’t something that most people shop for on a yearly basis. Before becoming a wedding photographer I actually worked at a bridal shop as a bridal consultant, so I have seen it all as far as the wedding shopping highs and lows. Because of this I wanted to put together a list of the Top 5 Tips for Finding the Perfect Wedding Dress.
#1. Go With An Open Mind-
It is shocking how many brides would come in with a very specific style or dress in mind. Then once they put on the dress 80% of the time they wouldn’t like it or would fall in love with a dress exactly opposite of what they thought they wanted. Coming in with a style or dress in mind isn’t a bad thing but also being open to try on other dresses is also important. It can cement that the dress you fell in love with online is 100% the one or it can also help you find the dress that is the one that maybe you would never have thought of.
#2. Its How The Dress Makes You Feel-
There are so many dress types, shapes, fabrics, silhouettes and styles that you will probably look amazing in more then one style. Follow your gut and pick the dress that makes you feel your best. If you just choose one that everyone says you look amazing in you might not have that same connection to the dress that you might have in another. So make sure you not only look amazing but feel amazing.
#3. Bring Your Closest Friends and Family Only-
How many times on “Say Yes to The Dress” have you seen brides come in with 10+ people for the dress selection? More often then not having too many people can really affect your dress selection negatively. When I worked at the bridal shop we would limit the number to three people just due the the size of the shop but also because anymore and too many opinions and ideas would start clouding your own thoughts and decisions. Bring only those the closest to you and who’s opinions you trust most to streamline the decision making.
#4. Know Your Price Point & Stick With It!
Before you step foot into any bridal shop it is probably a good idea to have a wedding budget in mind. Sometimes it’s tempting to say you have a higher budget then what you truly want to pay because you don’t want to limit what you can try on and you have always wanted to try on on a Hailey Paige… But when happens when you fall head over heels in love with your dream gown only to sit down and crunch the numbers and find our it’s not possible for it to be yours?? Be sure to tell your stylist your top number going in so they only pull dresses within your budget. This will save you a lot of stress, crying and angry looks from your soon to be hubby.
#5. Be Prepared to Say YES!
We have all heard those horror stories of those brides taking months and hundreds of dresses before the have found the one. This can be the case, but it can also be because the bride is scared to say yes! Just like you waited for the right man to walk into your life, you are also prepared to wait for that right dress. Well stop being scared of saying yes to the dress. Not all brides take hundreds of dresses, some its only two or three and some its even the first one. Stop being scared of saying yes at the first appointment after all I bought my dress the 1st time I started looking and still love it to this day.
Being engaged is such a fun season in your life! Enjoy every moment of it! If you find yourself getting stressed or overwhelmed, it’s important to take a step back and put things in perspective. And keep in mind that, while it’s great to have the support of family and friends, it’s ultimately your dress and your moment! The right dress will feel like you and make you happy when you have it on!
