The Magic of Calgary Acreage Family Photography at Golden Hour

There is something completely magical about Calgary acreage family photography, especially when the four kids who used to run wild on the property are all grown up with partners of their own. Getting a large crowd together can sometimes feel a bit like herding very well-dressed cats, but this stunning crew made it look completely effortless. We gathered right on their beautiful family land just as the sun began to dip, completely enveloping the property in the most perfect, dreamy golden light that every photographer lives for.

When your kids grow up and start branching out, those rare moments when everyone is back home on the land are worth their weight in gold. For this sunset session, the family chose a casual, coordinated wardrobe of classic denim, crisp whites, stripes, and a bold pop of red that photographed beautifully against the lush summer greenery. Everyone brought their A-game, plenty of laughs, and the absolute secret weapon of the afternoon: a ridiculously sweet 6-month-old black puppy sporting a yellow bow. Honestly, the puppy might have stolen the show just a little bit, but we let it slide because he is a very good boy.

We spent the evening wandering the wide-open grassy spaces, walking hand-in-hand, and letting the natural dynamics of the family take center stage. From proud parents standing alongside their adult children to the siblings cracking jokes and a few playful piggyback rides, the energy was light, genuine, and filled with nostalgia. The property even treated us to a guest appearance by a very fluffy, prized white silkie chicken, proving that rural sessions on the outskirts of the city truly have the best surprises.

As the sun lowered, it gave us those striking, dramatic light rays filtering through the treeline that make local portraits look so magical. Capturing the love and connection of a large family in a place that holds so many of their core memories is why I love doing what I do. Whether you have toddlers running circles or grown-up kids coming home for a visit, documenting your story on the land you love is always a beautiful idea.
