Chasing Sunsets & Poppies: A Dreamy Summer Coutts Centre Family Session

Driving south to Nanton always feels like a treat, especially when the destination is the stunning Coutts Centre for Western Heritage. It is a total hidden gem, and experiencing it in full bloom is well worth the short trip out of the city.

When planning this year’s summer Calgary family photography sessions, I wanted a spot with incredible backdrops and plenty of space for kids to explore. The Coutts Centre delivered perfectly with its open fields, rustic buildings, and rows of vibrant seasonal flowers.

The absolute star of the evening was the poppy field. Rows of bright orange and red blooms stretched across the landscape, making the entire farm feel like a dream. The kids had a blast exploring the paths between the flowers, and their excitement was so fun to watch.

My favorite part of these sessions is simply stepping back and letting natural interactions happen. Whether it was sisters sharing a quiet giggle on the grass, a little girl showing off her favorite dress, or a family walking hand-in-hand through the greenery, those unposed moments are always the most meaningful.

Beyond the flower patches, we spent some time by the old wooden homestead shack. Wrapped in lush greenery, it provided a beautiful, cozy country contrast to the wide-open spaces and gave everyone a nice spot to sit back and cuddle up close.

We wrapped up the night capturing sweet moments as the sun dipped low over the foothills. Now, I have to be completely honest—the Alberta mosquitoes were absolutely out for blood! They tried their best to gatecrash, but you would never know it looking at these photos. Every single family brought the best energy, laughs, and patience, turning a buggy evening into an amazing memory.
