Vendor Spotlight – Glimpz InvitationsThere are so many incredibly talented wedding vendor in Calgary and I am lucky enough to have gotten to know so many great ones through my career as a wedding photographer. A couple weeks ago I got to chat a bit more with Amanda from Glimpz Invitations. She is the owner and designer and is seriously one talented lady! She has been designing invitations for lucky brides for the last 15 years and has truly made a name for herself in the Calgary wedding industry. Rightly so too since all her work is seriously swoon worthy! I had been begging Amanda to chat a little more with me about her business as well as herself so I am thrilled she agreed. Read on to find out a little more about this very talented fried of mine! If you haven’t ever checked out her work make sure you do ASAP!!
1. How long have you been in business?Since May 2002, this is my 15th year doing invitations!2. What made you get into your career?I am a graphic/web designer and worked at Shaw for 7 years in their marketing department. In 2000-2001, the rage of handmade cards and scrapbooking started, which I of course jumped on. I had a bunch of friends getting married and I offered to do their invitations. Each time I finished a set of invitations, more and more people came to me and said, “these are really nice, you really should do them professionally”.. and so here I am! I continued to work at Shaw for the first three years of business and then in March 2005, I left my job to do invitations full time. I started with a business partner and our company was named Amajen (pronounced like Imagine). After 5 years, my business partner (and best friend) decided to move on from the world of invitations and so I renamed the company Glimpz (since Amajen was made up of our names “Amanda & Jen”) and continued on my own.3. What would you say your style is?Modern with clean lines. I’m not a fan or big ties or bows.4. Fun fact about you?I only like romantic books and movies! If there isn’t a love story, I’m not interested. My maid of honour told a funny story about this in her speech at my wedding. We used to work together at Shaw and she asked me one day “Do you want to come see Alien vs Predator with me and Chris after work”.. I looked at her and said “Do the Alien and the Predator fall in love and get married in the end?… then no, I don’t want to go”, she still tells this story all the time and it was 13 years ago!5. what inspires you?Hard work and doing things for others. To me, there’s nothing more inspiring than seeing people do things for others without an alterior motive. I like to pride myself in being a very thoughtful and giving person and this is attributed to all of the people who did so much for me growing up because I’ve been on my own since I was 16.6. What is your favorite event to create for?Although we do weddings, corporate events and more, weddings are my favourite. Each invitation is designed for the couple and I have a lot of fun getting to know the couple to create something that is just for them.7. If you were doing what your doing what would be your other dream career?Anything that I could do on a Hawaiian Island! If I could find a way to move there and make a living, I would do it, haha! Truly, I know that any career I choose would have to have a creative side to it or I would be miserable. When I chose to be a graphic designer, it was between that and a photographer.. so that would be my other dream career. Instead, I do photography as a hobby. Also, if I could switch heads all day in Photoshop, I would… I love it! I could totally work for Star Magazine and super impose celebrity’s heads on other peoples bodies 🙂
